LONDON N5

Discipline: Architectural Design
Year: Aug 2017
Use: Residential | New development
Location:  London EN5

Project:  Modern Minimalist Detached House.

Company: Aston Banks

The plot is located in North London at the rear garden of another property with a narrow access between two properties. It suffers from poor natural light due to the surrounding vegetation and the inability of outward-facing walls due to overlooking issues with the neighbours.

The key driver in developing these proposals was ensuring that natural light was able to penetrate deep into the plan to create rooms that felt spacious and bright.

-The first option was to staggered the 2 floors of this new development through a sloping roof. Therefore, minimising the bulk and maximising the distance to other properties’ amenity spaces.
-The second option was to design a 1 storey house in a U-shape towards the southerly rear to benefit from the natural light with fully glazed elevations. The black brick façade is intended to complement the brickwork of neighbouring houses.

The feeling of those two proposals is completely different although both comply with the council regulations. This is a preliminary design to start discussion with the council through pre-planning advice.
